When implementing change, many organizations jump to the training phase of the change process (e.g. Quality Circles, TQM, JIT etc.) without designing the systems that will support the principles and philosophies taught in the training.

Total Productive Maintenance is a change process. The people within the organization not only change the way they view the production equipment within the organization, but also the processes used to maintain that equipment. In essence, the TPM implementation process facilitates systems changes, promotes philosophy changes, and fosters skill development.

An assessment of the existing systems and current processes will help organizations identify where and when changes need to be made in order to support the long-term implementation process.
